My journey in genealogy began during the pandemic around the age of 16, and resulted in me quickly falling in love with the hobby. I had learned so much about my family history, from the sandy beaches of Manatí, Puerto Rico to the forests of Lettenreuth, Germany, with all the lines eventually merging in the city of Fort Wayne, which the Maumee flows through. I devoted much of my time scouring through archives in order to break my brick walls, and I got at least back to my third great-grandparents for many families. Unfortunately, as I got older my available free time diminished with it; especially in college, where my research-heavy degree makes me less hungry to do in research in my free time. Nevertheless, my love has remained over the years, even if I haven’t made any progress.
This is where Maumee Genealogy comes in. I want to have a public place where I document my research that will hopefully keep me motivated in continuing my family history studies. So, who exactly is the person behind this blog? I’m Aster Boschet, a university student from Fort Wayne, Indiana. My ancestry primarily comes from Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and France. As a result, my blog posts will reflect research into these areas.
The aim for the majority of my blog posts is to focus them around researching an ancestor as much as possible within a week-long period. In order to track my research progress, I will be following the level-up challenge from Yvette Hoitnik of the great blog Dutch Genealogy. My goal is to try to get an ancestor to level three (vitals key information about their life, vitals of immediate relatives) before I move on to someone new, but in cases of brick walls or my own general lack of interest I may decide to move on early. Attached to blog posts would be the individual research reports I made for figuring out the issues (with the blog posts themselves being a synthesis of the research done and my journey with figuring out the information). I’ll also have links to pages for each individual ancestor. Afterwards, I’ll also have the information up on WikiTree (for those wondering, my primary tree is kept locally via Gramps).
Besides just adding as many ancestors I have as possible, some of my additional goals include:
- Reaching back to Europe on all lines (excluding Indigenous and Black ancestors).
- Researching descendants of slaveowning ancestors, utilizing the framework provided by the US Black Heritage Project on WikiTree.
- Meeting the Genealogical Proof Standard for all ancestors (or Level 6 in the level-up framework).
One of my most fervent quests will almost certainly be my research into trying to figure out where exactly the Boschet last name comes from. I’m currently stuck in Bavaria and any information would be helpful (but more when we get to that elusive ancestor!).
As for one final note, I will not be starting from absolute beginnings for my more recent ancestors, as I already do have some research done for many of them (see below for a fan chart of my current research!). In these cases, I’ll be rechecking if new sources have come available and reanalyzing old sources.
To wrap up this post, I’m excited to get started on this journey once again. I can not guarantee it will be an easy ride (or a regularly updated one), but it’ll be a fun one! To get things started with, we will begin with my direct paternal great-grandfather, Leroy Andrew Boschet, born October 25th, 1903 and died February 29th, 1976.
